Early traffic, weather and community news for your day

CULLMAN — Good morning, readers, take a look at what’s going on today:


Cullman City Street Department has a patch crew working on 6th St. SW, Tanner Dr. SW and Greenwood Dr. NE. A maintenance crew will be working on a light pedestal at Sharpton Road NE at Highway 157 and another one will be striping Industrial Dr. SW. Some interference with traffic is expected.


Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind around 5 mph.

Best bets for today:

Summer drivers course offered: A summer driving class for full credit for drivers education, for those 15 to 18 years with a permit, will be held beginning June 4 (Wednesday). A full week of class and one day driving, enrollee must attend all. Fee is $150 for students in the Cullman County School System; $200 for all others. Can receive boating license, drivers license, and full credit for insurance discount.

Library’s summer reading program: The Cullman County Public Library’s summer reading program is ongoing through July 3 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m.), at 400 Clark St. NE, Cullman 35055. Many great guests and activities planned. Read books for prizes and save the list for school’s required reading.

Guests to include: Super Science Show, Peinhardt Farms, Stoney Lonesome Park, McWane Center Magic Show, Get Growing (and take home a plant), Polly Easterwood, Auntie Litter, Cullman County Water Board and more.

Prizes include: Rod/reel, T-shirts, beanbag chair, exploration station, restaurant coupons, science/construction kits, Merle Norman gift set and more.

Outdoor warning siren test: The Cullman County EMA will conduct an outdoor siren warning test at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, weather permitting.

Road closure: The Town of South Vinemont will close Patton Drive from Sherrill St. to Highway 31 on June 4, at 7 a.m. for road repairs. Road is expected to reopen June 5.
