Shoppers brave freezing weather, heavy crowds for Black Friday

CULLMAN — Braving the wee morning hours and long checkout lines Friday morning, Amie Yeager did something she had never done before: Participate in Black Friday.

Accompanied by her friends Sandy Walker and Kim Crumbley, Yeager spent the early part of Friday morning as one of the thousands descending on Cullman stores for the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy.

“We got up at 3 a.m. this morning, for our first year,” Yeager said.

Walker said the three decided to fight the crowds to see what all the fuss was about.

“We wanted to try it out, just for the fun,” she said.

While checking out at the Cullman Belk store, Walker said the deals really are worth the early start.

“The bargains are great,” she said.

At the Cullman Kmart Friday morning, shopper Treasa Hinkle said she considers herself a Black Friday veteran.

“I’ve done it every year for the past 20,” she said. “It’s just a lot of fun.”

Even with a 4 a.m. start on Black Friday, Belk customer Tina James still missed out on the deal she wanted.

“We were coming to get a laptop but just weren’t quick enough,” she said.

James’ friend Sherri Bright said Black Friday has become a recent tradition for her to get some shopping out of the way and save a little money.

“It’s all about getting the cheap stuff,” she said. “We’ve done it for the past few years.”

Cullman JCPenney manager Lynette Shelton said the Friday turnout exceeded her already high expectations.

“It was above expected, so we did great,” she said.

Dale Grant, manager of the Cullman Kmart, said this year’s Black Friday equaled or exceeded last year’s crowd.

“We haven’t seen daylight, yet,” he said with a laugh. “Things went pretty good today, about the same as last year.”

All stores reached noted the Alabama vs. Auburn Iron Bowl football game did cause a small slowdown during the afternoon.

“Things did ease up for the game,” Grant said.

A representative from the Cullman Wal-Mart declined to comment when reached Friday evening.
