Street, drainage work set for St. Joseph Street

By Trent Moore

Two city intersections will be closed for approximately one week, while city crews work to improve the drainage system in the area.

The intersections of Ann Street and Saint Joseph Street, and Ann Drive and St. Joseph Street, will be closed for approximately one week beginning today.

Both intersections are slated to re-open by Nov. 20.

Cullman Street Department Supervisor Rick Henry said the work should help residents in the area with drainage problems.

“We’ll be digging out an area at those intersections and putting in Pervious Concrete,” Henry said. “That will catch the water coming off that hill. Now, we’ll direct it to the ditches before it can get to St. Joseph Street.”

Pervious Concrete is a fairly new paving material that allows water to drain faster and more efficiently.

Henry said it should alleviate some flash flooding issues in and around Saint Joseph Street during heavy rains.

“That will help with water coming onto the road and into the yards,” he said.

Though the roads will be closed for seven days, Henry said the work should be completed sooner.

“It takes seven days for the stuff to completely dry out,” he said. “We want to keep the traffic off the roads and not take any chances.”

With numerous connecting roads in the surrounding blocks, Henry said he does not expect the work to be a problem for anyone living in the area.

“It shouldn’t cause any hardships on residents, because there are numerous other intersections to get out,” he said. “I don’t foresee any problems for area drivers.”
