WINSTON COUNTY — Two people, including an 80-year-old woman, were found dead as part of a double murder in a rural corner of Winston County near Addison.

A family friend found Maxine Carroll, 80, and Bryan Stephens, 50, dead in Carroll's home on County Road 41 in the Upshaw community near Addison on  Tuesday morning. Gunshot wounds were the cause of death for both victims.

On Wednesday, Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris said investigators had a suspect in custody and formal charges could be made soon.

“We think we have a good understanding of what went down,” Harris said. “We have someone we are now questioning.”

Stephens was reportedly Carroll's nephew and had been staying with her recently at her home.

Authorities have yet to release any information related to the potential motive for the murders.

Though the bodies were not discovered until late Tuesday morning, authorities believe the two had been dead since at least Sunday.

Carroll had reportedly worked as a school teacher in the community for several years before retiring.
