HANCEVILLE — Soon, everyone from school children to senior citizens will be able to safely enjoy walking around town with a federal grant awarded to Hanceville this week to fund the expansion of city sidewalks.

Mayor Kenneth Nail received word Monday Hanceville had been approved for the $106,922.40 grant through the Federal Transportation Alternatives Program. The funds will cover the expansion of sidewalks along Northeast College Drive, Northeast Blountsville Street, Dean Avenue Northeast and Stadium Street, he said.

“They will tie on to existing sidewalks,” Nail said. “A sidewalk  we have along Blountsville was poured by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and stopped halfway down the road. We plan to extend it down to the housing authority.”

Another stretch of new sidewalk will run down behind Hanceville Elementary to connect to Veterans Park, a second will go down College Drive Northeast near Hardees and a third section on Dean Avenue Northeast near the recreation center.

“They’re badly needed,” said Bobby Duffie, Hanceville Parks and Recreation Director. “It’s not safe for the kids walking home from school. They get out in the road because there is nowhere else for them to walk.”

Nail said the sidewalks will also complement the new walking trails the city recently finished with help from the Cullman County Road Department who donated nearly 900 tons of dirt.

“We’re always trying to encourage our residents to get out and walk and enjoy their city,” Nail said.

The Cullman County Economic Development office will be handling the administration of the grant for Hanceville, he said.
