Man with meth lab in bag attempts to elude deputies
CULLMAN — Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man Thursday after he allegedly tried to elude them while carrying a bag of meth-making materials.
Tony Hyde, 35, of the Pleasant Grove community, was charged with unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance in the first degree and resisting arrest.
Sheriff Tyler Roden said anonymous tips from the community led to Hyde’s arrest.
“The Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) got information he was possibly involved in meth-making at a residence on County Road 1485,” Roden said. “They’ve been looking into it for some time.”
As agents approached the residence Thursday for further investigation, they noticed a man run out the back door while carrying a bag.
“Hyde had evidently discovered them,” Roden said. “CNET agents began to chase him ... they didn’t know it was Hyde until they caught him.”
During the chase, Roden said Hyde allegedly threw his bag at the agents and then briefly resisted apprehension.
“Agents found the bag and discovered it contained meth-making materials,” Roden said. “No finished meth was found.”
Roden said he wanted to thank those who provided agents with the information that led to Hyde’s arrest.
“I want to emphasize just how in this case, developing information helped us get someone making meth,” Roden said. “I want to emphasize to citizens that the meth problem is something that affects us all. It’s not just a government or law enforcement problem, it’s a problem we all have together.”
Hyde is incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
Unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance in the first degree is a Class A felony, punishable by up to life in prison.
