Taste of Cullman fundraiser set for 5-8 p.m. Tuesday

CULLMAN — More than a dozen local restaurants are set to participate in the sixth annual Taste of Cullman United Way fundraiser, which is set for Tuesday.

The event will last from 5-8 p.m. and be hosted at the Cullman Church of Christ, at the intersection of Highway 157 and Childhaven Road.

Tickets, which cost $15, are for sale at the local United Way office and will also be available at the door.

“All of the money raised from the event goes to support our 18 different agencies,” Cullman County United Way Marketing Director Jacqueline Schendel said.

The Cullman County United Way supports agencies such as the Cullman County Red Cross, Cullman Caring For Kids food bank, Pilot Light House and others.

The event is an opportunity for local residents to get a taste of the various restaurants in Cullman, Schendel said.

“There are different tables set up, and you can move from restaurant to restaurant and sample all the different food,” she said. “It’s a great chance to sample a new restaurant if you’ve never eaten there.”

Restaurants set to participate include Barnett Bakery, Chamblee's Restaurant, Chick-Fil-A, Cow Cow Corner, Cullman Area Career Center, Grumpy's Pizza and Pasta, Jim 'N Nicks, Just Dessert 2 Bakery, Lombardo's Pasta Bar, Pepsi Cola, Roadhouse Bar-B-Que and Grill, Sweet Peppers Deli, Super Suppers and Truffles of Cullman.

With the economy struggling, Schendel said the Taste of Cullman fundraiser is more important now than ever.

“With the way things are, donations are down,” she said. “All of our agencies need the support that comes from these events.”

In addition to the food samples, live and silent auctions are also scheduled for the event.

Major items up for bid include autographed footballs by Alabama Coach Nick Saban and Auburn Coach Gene Chizik, a flat screen Sony HD television, an iPod touch, Nintendo DS, Blu-ray Disc DVD player, and Wii Band Hero.

United Way “Live United” shirts will also be on sale for $5, with special edition tie-dyed shirts for $10.

“This event just gets better every year,” Schendel said. “This is something Cullmanites really enjoy and anticipate attending. We are looking forward to another great year.”

The $15 ticket price — which was dropped from $15 to $5 last year — was raised back due to vendors running out of food too quickly last year, Schendel said.

“We had over 500 people last year at $5 and many of the restaurants ran out of food very early,” she said. “It was so crowded a lot of people couldn’t even get to the tables, so we thought it best to go back to the old price this year.”

Sponsors for the event include: AAR Mobility Systems, Cullman (Summa Technology), Cullman Regional Medical Center, EVA Bank, Premier Bank of the South and Studio 412.
