Cullman police have charged an Arab man in connection with the assault of an elderly Cullman woman early Monday morning.
Emmett L. Davis, 52, of Arab was taken into custody at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday evening. Cullman police transported Davis from Arab to the Cullman County detention center, where he currently being held on a single charge of first degree assault.
“As of right now, assault 1st is the only charge, but the investigation is nowhere close to being over, and additional charges are possible,” said assistant Cullman police chief Craig Green early Wednesday.
Police suspect Davis of attacking 87 year-old Helen Mayo in her home near Cullman High School early Monday, sending her to UAB hospital for treatment for severe facial injuries that, so far, have left her unable to speak.
Investigators now believe Davis knew Mayo; that gaining access to her home likely wasn’t a challenge. While investigators are still circling in on a motive for the alleged assault, Green said the suspect’s prior relationship with the victim answers a lot of questions police and neighbors had.
“He didn’t randomly pick her, which goes back to the idea that this was not a home invasion,” Green explained. “They were familiar with each other, because Mr. Davis had evidently done some maintenance work; small maintenance like lawn care and general yard upkeep, for Ms. Mayo in the past. He had, in fact, done that sort of work for a number of other people in this community.”
Police were able to develop enough evidence inside Ms. Mayo’s home, located at the corner of 14th Street and 4th Avenue, to issue an arrest warrant for Davis.
“The arrest was simply made on the work that investigation had done at the victim’s home and the info that was recovered off the search warrants that were served. We have been working closely with the Cullman County district attorney, and his office has been terrific for us — they have come to the victim’s home, and they also helped us in Arab, at the suspect’s home.”
