Hospital reports earnings

CULLMAN — Cullman Regional Medical Center reported another month of profits, but still ended just below the expected gains.

“I like these numbers,” said Jete Edmisson, the hospital’s chief financial officer. “We had a positive operating margin for October and we have doubled our bottom line compared to last year.”

Emergency room visits were down for the month of October but up from last year, averaging 120 patients per day, compared to 84 per day last year.

“The ER continued to impress, but it was a little lighter than what we have been seeing,” Edmisson said.

Since the closing of Woodland Medical Center in July, the emergency department’s numbers have continued to steadily rise.

President and CEO Jim Weidner also reported on his recent employee town hall meetings.

“All in all, despite that we haven’t had a salary increase in two years, the morale seemed very high,” Weidner said.

Weidner said surveys went out to employees, and about one-third of the workforce responded.

“We had 289 respond, and 93 percent answered they were willing to give more to the hospital,” he said.

Weidner also reported the recent flu pandemic practice at the hospital went well. The hospital has given out 400 employees seasonal flu shots. The hospital also has received 100 doses of the H1N1 vaccine and will prioritize those to the ER staff and the respiratory therapy department.

Weidner said the hospital will probably not have enough vaccines to offer an H1N1 vaccine clinic.
