Man arrested for impersonating deputy

By Patrick McCreless

A local man who allegedly impersonated a Cullman County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested by a real one Thursday.

According to sheriff’s reports, Matthew Jacob Pigg, 27, of the Nesmith community was charged with impersonating a peace officer.

Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden said Pigg had allegedly recently pretended to be a deputy when he contacted the New York State Police.

“He did not use his real name, he claimed to be someone else here,” Roden said.

Roden said Pigg supposedly called the New York authorities to track down family members he had been having issues with lately.

“He called wanting to know about certain individuals ... he was trying to determine their whereabouts,” Roden said.

Roden said Pigg allegedly claimed the sheriff’s office had kidnapping warrants on the individuals in question.

“The New York State Police thought something was suspicious so they called us to confirm,” Roden said. “We had no such warrants.”

Roden said the New York officers then sent his investigators their alleged recorded conversation with Pigg. They also contacted the individuals Pigg had asked about and let them listen to the conversation.

“They helped determine who it was,” Roden said.

Pigg was incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center, but has since been released on a $5,000 bond.

Impersonating a peace officer is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
