Hanceville considering water study

HANCEVILLE — The Hanceville City Council may soon initiate a water study in efforts to obtain possible state funding to fix drainage problems on U.S. Highway 31 and Alabama Highway 91.

The water study, which would focus on the drainage pipes under the northeast corner of Highway 31 and Highway 91, was discussed during the council’s regular meeting Thursday.

Mayor Kenneth Nail presented a $9,700 price quote for study, however, the council decided to table the matter until at least two other price quotes could be obtained.

“From talking with the (Alabama) Department of Transportation, I feel if we had some documentation saying these culverts are blocking water ... they say we could get money from the state to fix the problem,” Nail said.

Nail said the problem with the pipes is they cannot handle excess rainfall.

“The pipes are too small,” Nail said.

As a result, he said, excess rainfall is flooding into areas around Highways 91 and 31 as well as creating a sinkhole in front of the Exxon service station on Highway 31.

Also during the meeting, the council voted to allow the Hanceville Elementary School to hold a Relay For Life Carnival fundraiser on April 24 at the former National Guard Armory, free of charge.

Earlier in the meeting, council member Joann Walls, on behalf of the Hanceville Business Council, presented plaques to several students and faculty members in the city educational system for making a difference in the lives of others. Walls said the business council was recognizing the individuals as part of the 19th Annual Make A Difference Day.
