Two arrested for alleged meth-making, child endangerment

CULLMAN — Two Arab residents are behind bars after they allegedly made meth in the presence of two children.

Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Stormi Rae Black, 29, and Shawn Ray Harper, 31, Tuesday for unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance, two counts of chemical endangerment of a child and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The children, who belong to Black and are 3-years-old and 8-years-old, were taken into protective custody by the Department of Human Resources (DHR), said Sheriff Tyler Roden.

“It’s a shame, really, that we have to continually deal with this,” Roden said. “But we will continue to be aggressive and work with DHR ... and hold these people responsible.”

Roden said the arrests stemmed from a report DHR received earlier in the week about a possible meth lab at Black and Harper’s residence on County Road 1763.

“The report also indicated there were children living at the residence,” Roden said.

After arriving at the scene, deputies obtained probable cause to search the residence, at which point they allegedly found the chemicals and components used to construct a meth lab, Roden said.

“It was not an active lab,” Roden said. “But a drug enforcement cleanup crew was called in to remove the chemicals.”

Also recovered during the search was approximately 1.5 grams of meth.

Black and Harper are incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center, each with a $1 million bond.
