Local EMA unveils weather app

CULLMAN — Cullman County residents now have a new way to receive weather information when away from their computer or television.

The Cullman County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) unveiled a mobile app recently that will allow members of the community to access up-to-date information relating to emergency management, local weather, and emergency response agencies. According to Cullman EMA director Phyllis Little, should another natural disaster hit, like the one on April 27 two years ago, the app would be utilized to provide disaster-related information for recovery.

"This is not intended to replace primary means of emergency notification," Little said. "We never intend for it to replace weather radios. This is just an extra addition we're providing, and another way for people to get alerts."

The app, available for iPads, iPhones, and Android devices, provides local weather updates, weekly forecasts, weather alerts, Amber Alerts for the state, ALDOT road conditions, and school closings. In addition, the app has links to the EMA's Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as an icon for emergency contact information for other agencies in the county, and a calendar of events.

Little said she and Assistant Director Kelly Allen had downloaded and viewed several other county’s  EMA apps and shared it with several individuals, including elected officials, before moving forward with the project.

“I asked if it if was made available if they thought it would be an asset, and the answer I got was absolutely,” Little said.

Cullman County Commission Chairman Kenneth Walker was one of the ones who viewed the app before hand, and agreed it was a good thing for the community.

“I think it will be a big help, especially if kids are at home by themselves,” he said. “It’s a quick service for all. There are several different types of alerts you can get, which I think is great. It’s a great thing.”

Those interested in downloading the free app can do so by searching for “Cullman” or “Cullman EMA” in the iTunes or Android app store.
