Local residents are urged to be weather aware late tonight and into the early morning hours Wednesday as a strong cold front with severe storms pushes through the area.
With the front, damaging winds and heavy rain are the main threat, though an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, according to a spokesperson with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville.
“People need to be weather aware before they go to bed Tuesday night,” Jennifer Schuller with the NWS said. “Have your weather radios on. A lot of people don’t like to have them on during the night because of the noise, but that’s the point of them, to wake you up so you know what’s going on.”
Temperatures today are expected to reach the lower to mid 70’s before dropping into the lower 60’s. Schuller said storms are anticipated to move into the northwest corner of the state around midnight, and effect the Cullman area between 2-4 a.m. She said winds could gust as high as 40 mph as the system moves through.
“Anything that could easily be blown away, such as lawn furniture, needs to be secured,” she said.
Wednesday’s forecast calls for windy conditions with showers and thunderstorms before noon, and a high in the lower 60’s. The temperature dips near freezing Wednesday night.
The sun returns Thursday, but don’t expect much warmth as high’s are only expected to reach the mid to upper 40’s.
“It’s a big swing of temperatures,” Schuller said. “People will need to bring their coats back to work with them Thursday.”
The weekend looks clear with highs ranging from the lower to middle 50’s.
