2 local men charged with drug trafficking

CULLMAN — Two men from Cullman County were booked into the Cullman County Detention Center late Tuesday afternoon after being arrested on drug trafficking charges.

Jonathan Roberts Stark, 29, and Corey Jackson Coots, 21, have both been charged with trafficking marijuana. Their arrests stem from a follow up investigation by the Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) last week in which five others were arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana at a home on Lakehill Street.

“From the information that we gathered, we began working with the local postal inspector after learning that marijuana was being mailed out of state to Cullman,” Cullman Assistant Police Chief Craig Green said.

An undercover agent with CNET helped with the controlled delivery of the package. After the package was delivered and picked up by Stark and Coots, officers attempted to stop them in their vehicles. However, when stopped, both tried to get away, creating a small chase that was contained to the east side of the city. The two were finally caught and arrested at 4th St. SE, where the package containing 3.4 pounds of marijuana was seized, opened and contained. According to Green, the approximate street value is estimated to be $12,000.

“It’s important for people to know that over 2.2 pounds of marijuana is trafficking,” Green said. “In both cases we believe that it was not intended for personal use. Instead, we believe that it was to be divided up, which could target teenagers and younger age people. It’s something we won’t ignore and we can’t ignore.”

It’s possible a third person could also face charges.

“We believe there is a third person included in this and expect charges to be brought against them,” Green said.

The Drug Enforcement Agency, CNET and the local District Attorney’s office all worked together on the case.

At last check Wednesday, both Stark and Coots were still in jail on $1 million bonds.
