Shoplifting call leads to drug arrest

What began as a shoplifting patrol call around 11:30 p.m.  Monday, ended with a drug arrest by Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies.

Ciara Danielle Gilland, 20, of Cullman, was arrested June 24 and charged with two counts of unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest.

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said the fast response by the deputies was a key role in the arrest.

“Patrol received a call on a possible shoplifting incident by two females at the Dodge City Petro Station,” Rainey said. “When they arrived one female was by the counter and the other was in the ladies room and exited the building to try and get to their vehicle.”

Rainey said the deputies asked the female to come back inside for identification and she gave authorities a false name. The female by the counter provided identification and a consent to search and nothing was found. The second female then also gave a consent to search and deputies found stolen items.

“They found stolen merchandise in her purse wrapped in napkins. The witness there, which was the employee, identified the items as being stolen,” Rainey said. “It was two pairs of sunglasses and a knife shaped like a revolver.”

Deputies also found a prescription bottle in her purse with no label. Rainey said as officers were placing her in handcuffs, she didn’t comply, and they noticed the zip lock bag in her hand,  which contained different kinds of drugs.

“It was a quick response time by that deputies to be able to take this woman into custody without incident,” Rainey said. “I commend the patrol and deputy Pat Thompson for the good job they are doing. We still encourage the public to please contact us if they see anything suspicious so we can check it out and make the community safer for it’s citizens.”
