Good morning, readers, this is what's happening in your county today:
Traffic news:
Drivers traveling on Alabama Highway 157 near Cullman Regional Medical Center should schedule a few extra minutes into their travel time starting today. According to Alabama Department of Transportation Division I engineer Johnny Harris, ALDOT plans to transform the bridge at Lake Catoma into an intermediate one-lane bridge for short amounts of time during the day over the next several weeks, in order for materials being used in the construction of the new bridge to be unloaded.
The Cullman County Road Department is currently performing maintenance on County Road 522; and paving on County Road 904. Regular maintenance, including bushhogging, continues throughout the county.
The Cullman City Street Department reports crews will be asphalt patching in several areas throughout the day, cleaning drains and performing grass maintenance.
Weather:
Today: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph.
Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 66. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
Looking ahead:
Piano class for hopelessly busy people: This class will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. June 25, at Wallace State Community College. This beginning class in chord piano, where, in one session, students will learn all the chords needed to play any pop song, any style, any key, reading chord symbols, not notes. They’ll also learn how to embellish songs using the secrets and shortcuts of professional piano players. Register at 256-352-8138 (Melissa Arnold). David Haynes will be instructor.
Swamp John’s dinner: The Vinemont Basketball teams (both boys and girls) are holding a Swamp John’s dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. June 23, at the building at 6253 County Road 222, Cullman 35057. Live entertainment provided by band, Delirious. Cost is $10/plate: Fish, chicken or shrimp, slaw, hushpuppies and drink. All proceeds go to the teams’ needs. Info: Willard Waldrep at 256-339-1525.
Circle of Hope’s Shoot for a Cure: This Relay For Life team will hold their annual Shoot For A Cure June 23-24 at Camp David on County Road 940 in Jones Chapel. Entry fee is $15; Fun Round is $8. Awards given to competition winners. Concessions available. All proceeds to benefit Relay For Life.
Schedule is as follows: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Devotion will begin at 8 a.m., followed by breakfast.
A range of 20 3D targets will be set up with different competing divisions. For all ages and all levels. Shooters may also register for door prizes (free of charge). Also, a silent auction will be held.

Chamber re-posts tourism director opening
The search for Cullman’s first tourism director has hit a slight delay, as the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce has opted to re-post the opening following an initial round of applications late last month.

Bringing jobs to county, city
By 1943, the first Cullman Chamber of Commerce had been formed. At that time there were few industries but people began to realize the need for a group, such as the Chamber, to centralize their efforts. Raymond Yost was the Chamber’s first president, and Emma Marie Edleman became the go-to person to get things done around Cullman.
