Lawrence County commissioners vote to stay with NARCOG

CULLMAN — County commissioners in Lawrence County dispelled any rumors of the county withdrawing from the North-Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG) late last week when they voted unanimously to remain a member of the organization.

In an emailed copy to The Cullman Times, the resolution states the Lawrence County commission found it necessary at this time to support NARCOG in it's endeavor to remain a designated Regional Planning Agency under Alabama Legislative Act No. 1126, 1969. In addition, the resolution states the commission is confident NARCOG consultant Kenneth Kilgo has improved service member governments and will continue to improve both the image and services that NARCOG provides member governments.

"We wanted to support it," said Lawrence County appointee Dale Davis, who also serves as the chairman of NARCOG. "So we talked to the commission and it was agreed that we do a resolution to show our 100 percent support."

Kilgo hopes the passed resolution will serve as a statement to state leaders as NARCOG still awaits word from Gov. Robert Bentley on whether or not he will allow Morgan County to join a neighboring COG.

"I'm glad they passed it," Kilgo said. "There were some who were still upset with the way the hiring process went, but that's behind us and everybody is moving forward. I think it's a good thing."

Morgan County decided to cut its ties with NARCOG in April when the commission voted unanimously to pull out of the organization. It was a move that was anticipated by many board members for months, after Decatur voted to withdraw in late January. The separation stemmed from growing frustration with its limited influence over the decision-making process of hiring a new executive director in December of last year.

Though Morgan County is technically no long a part of NARCOG and the county's current contract expired Sept.. 30, Davis said services are still being offered to their senior citizens.

"We're going to continue to that until something happens or someone makes a decision," Davis said. "We're going to keep looking up and keep doing what we're doing.
