CULLMAN — A dangerous stretch of road in Cullman County was the site of yet another death Thursday, though it wasn’t caused by a traffic accident.
Construction worker James Lugar, 54, of Columbiana was killed when a piece of building material fell on him at a work site on Highway 278 at Kugler Creek. Lugar was reportedly working on the foundation for the creek’s bridge.
“He was down in a deep hole and a piece of building material or metal fell into the hole,” Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree said. “He was probably killed instantly.”
The accident occurred at approximately 10:05 a.m. and Lugar was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:25 a.m.
Lugar was employed by a contractor hired by the Alabama Department of Public Transportation.
Construction started a few months ago around the bridge to expand and straighten the road, which has been the site of several wrecks and deaths in recent years.
The project is slated for completion in the Spring of 2011.
