Health fair aimed at helping seniors through winter months

CULLMAN — With flu season and the winter months just around the corner, Cullman County seniors will have an opportunity to learn how to stay healthy and active during the cold weather as part of the annual Cullman County Retiree and Senior Health Fair Friday.

The event is taking place from 9 a.m. until noon at the Cullman Civic Center.

According to Cullman County Commission on Aging Director Randall Shedd, more than 30 exhibitors will be on hand to give health screenings, flu shots, information, and give away items.

"This should be a fun event for seniors to enjoy and benefit from," Shedd said. "Our goal is to get them prepared for winter, and one thing we focus on is socializing so that they're not sitting at home during the winter months. It's also a way for us to provide health awareness and prevention."

The program will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation by various speakers and a panel discussion on various heath-related topics such as steps to take to prevent falls, and how to prevent falling victim to fraud, among others.

At the Commission on Aging booth, employees will be giving away bars of soap tissue, and hand sanitizer to promote flu prevention.

The first 400 attendees will receive a free boxed lunch at noon. Flu shots will also be available at no cost to those with Medicare or insurance. In addition, money will be given away to those who bring in the best painted pumpkin.

The event is a joint project by the Cullman County Commission on Aging and the Cullman Community Health Coalition in cooperation with Cullman Regional Medical Center, United Way of Cullman, NARCOG, and the Alabama
