Area businesses prepping for Black Friday

— Black Friday just keeps getting earlier, and much like previous years many area retail businesses will kick off shopping festivities tonight for bargain hunters.

Major retailers started opening during the Thanksgiving holiday with in-store deals rather than opening early Friday morning. Belk, which opened at midnight last year, will allow customers to begin shopping at 8 tonight. Seven-year Belk employee Pam Patrick said the Lancome counter where she primarily works, will have several specials like most other counter brands in the department store.

“Lancome will have its own specials like getting a free eye-lash curler with a mascara purchase,” Patrick said. “All of our Rampage boots will also be on sale for $19.99 during Black Friday. We have a lot of sales throughout the store. I think it’s a fun shopping day; people are literally running through the doors to run and find what they are coming to buy and it’s very exciting.”

Belk’s Black Friday first-timer Miranda Williams is not afraid of working the renowned shopping event, even with all the horror stories floating around.

“I was a little nervous about this day, this is my first year with Belk, but everyone here is really nice and offering to help, so now I’m just excited,” Williams said. “We’re all dressing Christmasy for Black Friday. I think it will be a great day.”

J.C.Penney store Manager Tammy Crow said their employees will be dressed in pajamas and they will open their doors at 8 tonight on Thursday and close at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Assistant police chief Craig Green said officer will work normal set shifts during the Black Friday festivities.

“Some store managers have hired off-duty officers to come in and work inside the store during the potentially chaotic shopping times,” Green said. “I will be out helping Thursday night and Friday morning as well.”
