— A convicted felon was arrested after allegedly stabbing the good Samaritan who gave him a ride on Christmas night around 5:30 p.m.

Ronald Morris White, 61, of Mississippi was hitchhiking near Pell City when David and Michelle Lalone, of New Mexico offered him a ride. Cullman Assistant police chief Craig Green said Mrs. Lalone called to report that her husband had been stabbed by the man they picked up earlier that evening.

“Mr. Lalone had pulled off the interstate (Interstate 65) at Exit 308 on (Alabama Highway) 278 and requested that White get out of their vehicle, who then became angry and took a swing  at Mr. Lalone,” Green said. “He was able to avoid the punch, but then he said he felt pain in his stomach and realized he had been stabbed.”

Green said that several patrol units responded and officer Justin Craft talked with the wife of the victim, and Lalone was then transported to Cullman Regional Medical Center to receive two stitches. A short time later, Craft located the hitchhiker, who was intoxicated, and arrested him for public intoxication.

“The injuries to the victim were minor and weren’t internal,” Green said. “After officer Craft located the suspect, he took him to CRMC where the victim was able to positively identify him as the man who stabbed him.”

The only means of identification on White was his convicted felon I.D. card and he later told police he was homeless and moves from state to state depending on where he can get a ride, Green said.

Cullman investigators haven’t posted additional charges against White because the Lalone family might not be able to return to court in Cullman, and White has not cooperated with law enforcement, Green added. Cullman investigators will be meeting with the family on Friday to discuss the situation.

White has felony drug and assault charges, as well as, an escape charge and served time in prison, but is currently not wanted by any entity.

White is being held at the Cullman County Detention Center but his bond is not currently available.
