TJ Maxx Could Be Coming

By Trent Moore

CULLMAN — Two jobs have been posted on the official T.J. Maxx Web site, looking for a manager and assistant manager for a Cullman retail store location. The problem? There is no T.J. Maxx store in Cullman — at least not yet. Drinkard Development representative Jason Grimmett said his group is currently in discussions with a retailer to fill the former Goody’s building near the Wal-Mart shopping center — though he cannot comment on any specifics, as negotiations are ongoing. “We are working with a national retailer, but we are not at liberty to say anything official at this time,” he said. “We hope to make an announcement in the next few weeks about the future of that building.” If a T.J. Maxx store is opened in Cullman, it could create as many as 40-50 jobs for the area, according to estimates from the Cullman Economic Development Agency. Dale Greer, assistant director of Cullman Economic Development, said the store could be a boon for the shopping center if T.J. Maxx does take up residence there. “With that spot potentially filled, it would generate more foot traffic for that shopping center and be a benefit to all those stores,” he said. “You never like to have a big, empty storefront in a shopping center.” A representative from TJX corporate headquarters, which owns the T.J. Maxx chain, was unavailable for comment by press time. T.J. Maxx is a national clothing retail chain that sells adult and children’s attire. ‰ Trent Moore can be reached by e-mail at trentm@cullmantimes.com, or by telephone at 734-2131, ext. 225. =================== Derek Price Editor, The Cullman Times (256) 734-2131, ext. 213
