Grant workshops set for June 17-18
By Trent MooreTwo upcoming economic workshops will give community leaders and residents a chance to learn more about programs and grants available for Cullman County.
The first event, set for June 17, will be hosted by Sen. Jeff Sessions and the United States Department of Agriculture - Rural Development (USDA RD).
North Alabama mayors have been invited to attend the workshop, where information about federal grants available for rural communities will be reviewed.
Grants from the USDA RD primarily fund municipal projects, as well as infrastructure projects for rural communities.
Following some recent legislation, Sessions said the agency has seen an influx of funds to be distributed.
“This agency received a significant increase in funding for 2009 through the Omnibus Bill, Farm Bill and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Sessions said via press release.
Beverly Helton, acting state director of the USDA RD, is scheduled to give an in-depth presentation about available programs.
This workshop is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be held at Cullman City Hall.
A second workshop is scheduled for June 18, which will feature information about programs available through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) and the Alabama Rural Action Commission (ARAC).
Topics of discussion are set to include community development funding, education improvement funding and economic development funding.
Bill Johnson, ADECA director, and ARAC executive director Gerald Dial and Jessica Dent are scheduled to lead presentations at the workshop.
The meeting is co-sponsored by the Cullman city and county economic development offices, and is scheduled to last from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center.
This meeting is free to the public, though seating is limited.
RSVP information can be found by calling (256) 775-4696.
More information can be found online at ADECA’s official Web site (http://www.adeca.state.al.us), ARAC’s official Web site (http://www.alabamaruralaction.com) and USDA RD’s official Web site (http://www.rurdev.usda.gov).
