Children learn about space, astronauts at Cullman library
By Trent MooreAfter spending Thursday morning at the Cullman Public Library, 12-year-old Kelly Anderson said she wants to learn more about space and astronauts.
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center hosted a program at the library to teach children about space shuttles, astronaut training and the Ares rockets. The program included inflatable props and examples of astronaut equipment.
“I really liked when she taught about the different space ship parts,” Kelly said.
Kelly’s younger sister Kaylee agreed, adding, “I liked how she showed us how it orbits the Earth.”
Lauren Cole, with the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, said the youth program is an excellent tool to show children the “fun” side of math and science.
“It’s really relevant, considering we do a lot of these things around here,” she said, referring to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. “We’re just trying to spark an interest in them.”
Cole said the event is a great way to reach out and let people know exactly what goes on in the space program.
“It’s important for us to get out into the community and let people see exactly what it is we do,” she said.
Cassie Johnson, library youth director, said summer programs are a chance to encourage children to visit the library in the summer months.
“We’re just trying to get kids into the library and give them something fun to do,” she said. “A lot of children don’t get to come here during the school year, so events like this gives them a chance to come out. It’s educational, plus its fun.”
