Unemployment in Cullman climbs to 8.6 percent
By Trent MooreThe unemployment rate for Cullman county has climbed to 8.6 percent for March, 2009 — up from just 8.3 percent in February, 2009.
Though the number is creeping toward double digits, the rate of increase has slowed considerably. In February, the unemployment rate was up nearly a point from the previous month, with 7.4 percent posted in January, 2009.
A sluggish economy, as well as numerous layoffs and closings at local businesses, has contributed to the steady rise in unemployment.
Cullman County is still below the state average of 9 percent, though slightly above the national average of 8.5 percent.
Though the rate is increasing, Cullman Economic Development Assistant Director Dale Greer said he believes Cullman county remains relatively strong despite the rough economy.
“We’re still below the state average, so that’s good,” he said. “Unemployment this high is never something you like to see, but compared to surrounding states and the rest of Alabama we’re doing all right.”
When compared to surrounding counties, Cullman remained near or below the area average. Winston County posted 16.3 percent, Walker County had 8.6 percent, Morgan County had 8.6 percent, Blount County had 8.5 percent and Marshall County had 8.4 percent.
Sandra Rhodes, with the Alabama Career Center, said she has noticed a definite increase in local job hunters seeking help in recent months.
“Most of the folks coming in are getting their resumes in the system and looking for positions,” she said. “What’s beginning to happen now, is even though employers may not be listing jobs, they’re still looking on there, so people are making sure their resumes look good and are in the system.”
Statewide, Shelby County posted the lowest unemployment rate at 6.3 percent, with Wilcox County coming in as the highest with 22.5 percent.
Job listings with the Alabama Career Center, located at the Wallace State Community College banquet hall, can be found at the center’s Web site (https://joblink.alabama.gov/ada).
More information about unemployment benefits can be found at the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Web site (http://dir.alabama.gov/uc).
