Man who fled injured deputy arrested
By Patrick McCrelessThe man who escaped arrest on a felony warrant last week is now behind bars while the Cullman County Sheriff’s deputy who injured himself during the pursuit will soon return to work.
Deputies arrested Shane Wesley Kelley, 22 of Cullman Monday on a warrant for failure to appear for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Sheriff Tyler Roden said Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) agents and patrol deputies spotted Kelley Monday in the Holly Pond area.
“They did a little bit of surveillance,” Roden said. “He was in a vehicle. They trailed him and waited until he got out at a residence.”
Roden said Kelley was arrested without incident at a residence on County Road 167.
According to sheriff’s reports, Kelley eluded the deputy, whose name was not released, Friday at a residence in the Etha community. During the pursuit, the deputy fell and was injured while attempting to jump a fence. The deputy called for backup and was air-lifted to a Huntsville hospital. After conducting several tests to ensure he did not have a spinal injury, the deputy was released.
“He’s doing good,” Roden said. “He’ll be on light duty for a while. But he hasn’t come back in yet.”
Roden said no further charges, such as attempting to elude or escape, have been levied against Kelley.
“There may be some at a later time but not at this time,” he said.
Kelley is incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center without bond.
Unlawful possession of a controlled substance is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
