Looking back at the past four years, Vinemont High School graduate Michael Vickers said the thing he would miss most about high school was simple: The people.
“More than anything, I think I’ll miss doing everything with my friends,” he said. “I’ll really miss hanging out with everyone all the time.”
With high school behind him, Vickers said he now has his sights set on college.
“I actually started precision machining classes at Wallace last summer, so I’ll continue those now,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting started back up with those.”
A new chapter began for nearly 200 Cullman county students Sunday, as Vinemont High School and West Point High School held graduation ceremonies at Wallace State in Hanceville. Fairview High School held ceremonies Saturday night.
Vinemont High School class president and valedictorian Will Hasenbien gave a hopeful address about the future ahead.
“Now, as we look back there are memories of joy and good things yet to come,” he said. “The only limits in this life are the ones we set for ourselves ... So, how will we change the world?”
Ashley Robertson, Vinemont High School salutatorian, said the thing that will stay with her most from high school are the fellow students she grew up with.
“The thing that sticks out to me the most are the people,” she said. “I’m thankful for all of the people I have met.”
Vinemont High School Principal Robert Barnes offered the 69-member graduating class accolades, as well.
“This day has finally arrived,” he said. “You’ve grown, matured and excelled. This class is one of the finest ever to come through Vinemont.”
West Point High School salutatorian Michael Tolbert said he was happy to have his entire, 110-person class gathered together to say good-bye.
“I’m just glad we can come together one last time,” he said.
Jared Oldacre, West Point High School valedictorian, thanked all of the people who helped teach and mold the class of 2009.
“Many people have contributed a lot of hard work to make this possible,” he said. “There have been a lot of amazing moments and I can see this class has great potential ... I know it’s going to make an impact on the world.”
Fairview High School held graduation ceremonies Saturday night at Wallace State, with class president Austin Jolley offering his classmates some words of encouragement in the face of potential adversity.
“Never lose faith or give up hope,” he said.
Fairview High School graduate Lauren Dahlke also performed a rendition of “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus, after being honored with a lifetime perfect attendance award.
