One Cullman County resident was killed and seven others were injured during a three-vehicle wreck Saturday in the Valley Grove area.
Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree pronounced Liliana Brown, 68, of Cullman dead at the scene at approximately 8:16 p.m.
“She had massive internal and head injuries that were sustained in the wreck,” Murphree said.
According to Alabama State Trooper reports, the wreck occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. on County Road 437.
Injured in the wreck was Brown’s husband, 73-year-old William Brown, who was driving their 1989 Nissan at the time of the incident. Both Browns were wearing seat belts.
Also injured was the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet, Justin Hanby, 16, of Logan, as well as his passengers Billy Oden, 15, of Cullman, Tileana Runge, 17, of Vinemont, Jeb Griffin, 15, of Vinemont, Heather Randolph, 17, of Hartselle and Bethany Martin, 18, of Cullman.
Reports indicate none of the passengers wore seat belts during the wreck.
The driver of the third vehicle, a 1996 Chevrolet, was not injured.
All of the victims were transported by ambulance to the hospital.
The cause of the wreck is still undetermined, though Murphree noted the weather was bad Saturday night.
“It was a terrible raining and lightning storm,” Murphree said.
Alabama Department of Public Safety statistics indicate there have been 202 reported vehicle fatalities to date this year. Last year at this date, 222 fatalities had been reported.
Of this year’s fatalities, 114 were not wearing seat belts.
