Officials working to get downtown red lights

DODGE CITY — Residents of Dodge City may soon notice some new red lights in the community’s downtown area, if the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) approves the project.
The town council passed a new resolution Thursday agreeing to pay half of the cost to add traffic lights to the town — approximately $40,000 per light — after meeting with ALDOT officials.
The town hopes to place red lights at the intersections of US Highway 69 and Interstate 65, and Highway 69 and local road 216. Both intersections are high-traffic areas, town council president Tawana Canada said.
“Traffic is just so heavy in this area, due to people going to the OHV park, the lake and to Jasper,” she said. “Our local residents are really having trouble at these intersections.”
The final decision to approve the lights falls to ALDOT, as they would be on a state highway.
“We met with them and they are going to conduct a traffic test and count the vehicles coming through the area soon,” Canada said. “After that, we’ll see where we are.”
The council also lowered the speed limits on local road 262 and local road 263 to 25 miles-per-hour. Both roads were previously 45 miles-per-hour.
“The residents asked us to lower the limits because they have had problems with speeders,” Canada said.
