Dodge City keeping deputy

DODGE CITY — Dodge City residents will have their own Cullman County Sheriff’s Office deputy for at least another year.
The town council voted unanimously Thursday to renew its annual contract with the sheriff’s office to keep a deputy assigned to the area for the next 12 months, barring any complications.
“I think he’s doing a great job and I think we need him,” council member Anthony Todd said.
The town started the program, which costs $37,564 annually, last year. Per the agreement, Hogeland is assigned to patrol only the town of Dodge City — unless he is called away to assist another officer during an emergency.
Hogeland has been on the job since he replaced former area deputy Brett Rodgers in December. Rodgers left to pursue a position with the forestry department.
At the meeting, council president Tawana Canada commended Hogeland for his efforts.
“We’ve heard nothing but compliments,” she said. “Everyone is saying how good a job you’re doing.”
The $37,564 amount is paid from the town’s general fund, and includes both Hogeland’s salary and benefits.
The council also:
‰ Announced the town’s involvement in the county-wide clean-up day on April 4. All residents are encouraged to clean their yards and pick up trash in the town. A large dumpster will be available at the Dodge City volunteer fire department.
‰ Reminded all residents that a burn permit is required when burning brush in the town. A permit is free and can be acquired by calling the town hall at (256) 287-0364.
‰ Approved plans to charge $25 per day for large groups to use electrical service at the town park.
‰ Made a $300 donation to the Cullman County Soil and Water Conservation District.
‰ Announced the new lighting equipment at the town park is installed and functioning.
‰ Tabled discussions regarding the adoption of H&H Road until it meets county specifications.
‰ Decided to continue accepting bids for town lawn mowing services until March 27. The bids will be opened on March 30.
‰ Adopted standard IRS fuel reimbursement procedures for the town at 55-cents-per-mile.
