Wallace State Community College will host its first Black History Month Program on Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“I want to see all the people of Cullman County be a part of this, no matter what color,” Patrick Ward, organizer, said.
Ward said this is the first time, to his knowledge, something like this has happened in Cullman.
“This will be an inspirational event for everyone who comes,” Ward said. “Black History Month is a time for everyone to come together.”
Melinda Edwards, dean of institutional outreach heads the diversity committee at Wallace.
“Wallace State Community College seeks to foster a climate that honors and celebrates diversity in all its forms. The Diversity Committee believes that events and activities such as this will provide awareness and that a diverse population enriches all members of the community," Edwards said.
Ward said many special guests will be there, including former mayors of Colony.
“Former mayors Mrs. Johnson and Colony’s first mayor Mr. John Purifoy will be guest speakers,” he said.
Other guests include Rev. Jerome Fields, pastor of Fairview Baptist Church in Colony, Joe’Ann Minnett and Ward.
Music will be provided by 2-4-U, Kaerina Harris, Colony Community Choir and Cornerstone Revival Center choir.
Americans have recognized black history month annually since 1926. It is a time to remember and celebrate events in the history of black people in the United States. According to biography.com, the month of February was chosen because it was a way to honor two of the men whose actions altered the future of blacks in America, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, who both were born in February.
Ward is excited the community is coming together for an event like this.
“My goal is to see a 1,000 people at this event,” he said.
Ward hopes to have a packed house.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre of the WSCC Student Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.
