Sudden storms knock out power in Holly Pond

Late afternoon storms left Holly Pond residents without power for hours Wednesday afternoon leading Mayor Herman Nail to direct traffic at the town’s red light.
Nail said crews were trying to stop oil from leaking from the transformers.
Kelly Allen, assistant emergency management agency director said the agency received numerous reports of trees down across the county.
“The only damage reported so far are trees down and we have not had any structure damage,” Allen said.
Trees were reported across several County Roads, including 222, 310, 1162, 1169, 1760, 509 and 946, near Guthery’s Crossroads and in Colony on Fields Road. Most of the trees had been cleared away by 4 p.m.
Brian Lacy of the Cullman Electric Cooperative said three substations were out. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Berlin substation and another substation which provides power to the industrial park area had been repaired.
“Currently the Holly Pond substation, which serves the Holly Pond area is out right now,” Lacy said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 2,300 people in the Holly Pond area were out of power.
Lacy said the damage was wind related.
“The winds are causing the problems,” he said. “We have crews working around the clock until it is fixed. If the wind keeps blowing like this we will be busy all night.”
