Officials seek another council member, attorney

COLONY — Colony officials announced at Friday night’s meeting, they will begin looking for a fifth council member.
In December, the council asked Jeffrey Hall to be on the council to fill the fifth seat, but he has yet to attend a meeting.
“We need a team player that’s going to work with us,” Fitts said.
Council member Patrick Ward suggested Junior Webb to fill the seat.
The council asked Webb to attend the next meeting before making a final decision.
The council also discussed hiring a new town attorney. Previous attorney Sara Baker resigned earlier this month. Baker could not be reached for comment before deadline.
“For myself, I think it’s best we get one outside of Cullman County,” said Mayor Morris Fitts.”
Ward said the council needs to get one quickly.
“I think we need one as soon as possible. We need to do some interviews and see who fits best with Colony.”
“Right now we can’t do anything until we get that lawyer,” said Brenda Johnson, council member.
The council fielded questions concerning pot holes and the condition of the roads in the area.
“In the winter time they don’t work on the roads,” Fitts said. “You’ll have to talk to the county commissioners.”
Ward said it is the town’s responsibility to find someone to fix the roads.
“We will have to find someone,” Ward said. “It is the town’s responsibility to see that it’s fixed. We will see if we can get someone out there to see about it.”
Council member Donnis Leeth suggested they ask the county commissioners to attend the next meeting and answer questions.
“We will ask the commissioners to come to our meeting and see what they can do for us,” Leeth said.
The council also:
‰ Approved $75 to be paid to the Cullman Mayors Association.
‰ Approved $150 to be paid to the Black Mayors Association.
‰ Approved $100 per council member to attend the Alabama League of Municipalities workshop in Montgomery on Feb. 24.
Decided to have someone look at the town’s tractors which are in need of repair.
