Oktoberfest kicks off
By Trent MooreAs the Cullman High School German Band played in the background, the choosing of Miss Oktoberfest 2008 took a humorous turn Sunday, at the opening ceremonies for this year’s Cullman Oktoberfest.
When the Fair Queen representatives from across the county all bit into their ceremonial cupcakes, hoping they would be the lucky lady to find a hidden pretzel and be crowned Miss Oktoberfest, it seemed like no one did. After a few more bites, still, nothing.
Once every cupcake had been essentially devoured, Cold Springs High School Fair Queen representative Paige Parker finally smiled, and triumphantly held up a small piece of pretzel that had gone unnoticed underneath the icing.
“Thanks,” she said with a smile, still swallowing.
The official opening ceremonies for Oktoberfest week also brought the presentation of the 2008 Burgermeisters, a position that acts as honorary mayor for the week.
This year’s selection was a little different than usual, with the family of the late Philip and Pat Clemmons being awarded the honor, Master of Ceremonies Ernest Hauk explained.
“Philip and Pat Clemmons were very involved in doing for Oktoberfest,” he said. “That is why I’m so happy to present their family as this year’s Burgermeister family.”
The Clemmons’ children Philip Clemmons, Jr., Nancy Clemmons Moore and Katherine Clemmons officially accepted the honor at the ceremony.
Philip Clemmons, Jr., said he was honored to receive the award in recognition of his family.
“I would like to thank you for honoring my family with this,” he said. “I know we always look forward to Oktoberfest. I’d like to thank everyone for this week, and this festival, which really meant a lot to my parents.”
Elaine Fuller, Cullman Oktoberfest Committee member, said turnout for the weekend activities more than met expectations.
“We had a larger crowd than we expected for opening day, and we are already talking about adding more activities next year,” she said. “Overall, it was a really good day.”
Oktoberfest events continue throughout the week, with a full schedule available online at http://www.cullmanoktoberfest.com.
