Third graders in the Cullman City Schools system recently received their scores for the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test (ARMT), and most scored well above the average.
The scores are measured in four levels. Students who score in Level I do not meet the academic content standards; students scoring in level II partially meet the content standards; students in level III meet the content standards; and students scoring in level IV exceed the academic content standards.
Separate scores are given for both the reading and math portions of the test.
The East Elementary School students posted very solid numbers in the reading aspect.
Approximately 83 percent of East Elementary School students scored in the level IV category. Approximately 12 percent of the students scored in the level III category. Slightly more than one percent of the students scored in the first level, while 3 percent scored in level II.
The math scores at East Elementary were similar, with 76 percent of the students scoring in level IV, 16 percent scoring in level III, five percent scoring in level II, and 2 percent scoring in level I.
At West Elementary, approximately 69 percent of the students scored in the level IV reading range. Twenty percent posted scores in level III, nine percent in level II, and 0.8 percent in level I.
Math scores were slightly lower, with 65 percent scoring in level IV, 21 percent scoring in level III, 10 percent scoring in level II, and two percent scoring in level I.
Superintendent Jan Harris said she considers the high overall scores the product of a combined effort between the students, teachers and principals.
“We’re very proud,” she said. “Our teachers are doing an exceptional job teaching and ... working with individual student needs. We have intelligent students, supportive parents and dedicated teachers who are highly competent in their fields. All of these efforts are working together to create a synergy that is very successful.”
