Cullman County Sheriff’s investigators extradited a U.S. Marine-in-training from South Carolina Tuesday on child sexual abuse charges.
Matthew Wade Mork, 19 of Cullman was arrested and charged with sodomy in the first degree and sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old. The Cullman Police Department arrested Mork on warrants for open container of alcohol and an expired tag.
At the time of his extradition, Mork was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, which is near Beaufort, SC.
The charges developed from a complaint made in May by a parent of a child less than 12 years old. Sheriff’s reports state the child was allegedly sexually abused repeatedly over the last two years. Reports also indicate the suspect was known to the victim.
“A suspect (Mork) was named and there was enough probable cause for a warrant to be obtained,” said Chief Deputy Tony Quick. “Mork was located serving in the Marines ... we made arrangements for him to be held there incarcerated and then we transported him back.”
Mork is incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center on a $65,000 bond.
Sodomy in the first degree is a Class A felony, punishable by up to life in prison. Sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
