New scam reported

By David Lazenby

Cullman County Sheriff’s Office officials warn of a new telephone scam in which fraudulent telemarketers coax individuals into giving their checking account information.

Pam Miller, secretary for investigations, said scheme perpetrators call individuals to inform them their banking information has been posted on the Internet. They then ask for the individuals’ checking account information as verification.

Miller said this information should never be given out to an unknown caller.

“No one is going to ask for their checking account over the phone,” she said.

Miller said the elderly are particularly susceptible to this type of crime.

“We get so many reports where these poor older people get scammed,” she said.

According to consumeraffairs.com, this scheme was the second-most frequently used phone scam in 2005.
