Vinemont grad crowned Miss Wallace State 2007

Ashley Kraft of Vinemont was crowned 2007 Miss Wallace State in the Miss Alabama preliminary pageant held Sunday afternoon at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville.

Miss Alabama 2006 Melinda Toole joined Miss Wallace State 2006 Ashlee Maddox as Mistresses of Ceremonies.

As Miss Wallace State, Kraft wins a one-year tuition scholarship to WSCC and a $300 cash scholarship. A nursing major at WSCC, her platform is “Big Brothers/Big Sisters.”

Jessi Anders of Cullman, also a nursing major, was chosen first runner-up to Miss Wallace State and received a $275 cash scholarship. Anders won the talent portion of the contest with her vocal performance of “You Will Never Thirst Again.”

Desiree Baird of Gardendale was named second runner-up and the winner of a $250 scholarship. Baird is a photography and art major at Wallace State and the reigning Miss Deaf Alabama.

Third runner-up Rachel Jones of Spanish Fort received a $225 scholarship. Darenda Mayfield of Holly Pond was the winner of the swimsuit competition.

A total of 11 young women entered the 2007 Miss Wallace State Pageant. Other contestants this year included Kerah Hyatt of Cullman, Cory Ann Turner of Huntsville, Brooke Poe of Birmingham, Kimberly Ellis of Locust Fork, Whitney Hays of Cullman and Brittany Romano of Jasper.

The Miss Wallace State pageant is a Miss Alabama preliminary in the Miss America system. The Miss America Organization is the leading provider of scholarships for young women in the world. Each year, more than $40 million in cash and tuition scholarship assistance is made available to the young women who compete in the system.
