Bookmobile program hosts day of fun

Visitors at Sportsman Lake Park had the added of convenience checking out library books Saturday.

The park was paid a visit from the Cullman County Bookmobile as part of the library system's End of Summer Blast.

According to the library system's extension coordinator, Jeremy Weissend, who is in charge of the bookmobile, the event was designed raise awareness for the library's mobile program.

"I think we really make an impact," Weissend said. "This is the best outreach tool the library has.

"We try to deliver the same service they would get if they just went to the library, which is important, especially with the price of gas right now."

The bookmobile makes bi-weekly visits to schools, day cares, senior centers and nursing homes all over the county.

With many active readers, Weissend said he rotates out all the books and videos every two weeks to supply the readers with new material, which ranges from adult nonfiction to pre-school.

Since the bookmobile has access to the Internet, he said, patrons can also order books and have them delivered at the next stop.

As part of Saturday's activities, Weissend and volunteers offered games, contests and free admission to the park's rides to anyone who had a library card Saturday.

He even offered a checker game challenge to anyone who thought they could beat him at the game of strategy.

"I think she's about to beat me," said Weissend while playing 10-year-old Ashley Curvin of Vinemont.

Free of charge, the bookmobile is open to new schedule stops, but a minimum of 10 patrons is preferred.

Weissend issued a special thanks to park manager Larry Woods, who allowed the bookmobile to use the park and free access to the rides.
