Cullman County officials now have a better understanding of the work needed to be done to fix a minor problem involving the dam at Sportsman Lake Park.
Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a briefing with officials recently to discuss and outline the maintenance plan for the project.
"We were real pleased with the report we got on it," Cullman County Commission Chairman James Graves said. "It went much better than we had anticipated."
According to Graves, the main problem has been water seeping through the dam at the back of the lake, causing a concern among some that it was weakening. However, he said the engineers were sure that wasn't the case.
"They seem to think it had something to do with the roots of some of the old trees around the area," Graves said.
It was first anticipated the lake would have to be completely drained before any work could be done, but Graves added that won't be the case, as the only work required is going to be on the spillway, which can be done in-house
"They said that ought to take care of it," Graves said.
Because the level of the lake is going to be lower than normal, the Cullman County Parks and Recreation Department has opened the lake for public fishing, free of charge until further notice. According to Cullman County Park and Recreation manager Delitha Marchman, the reason is because the county is trying to remove as many fish as possible.
A limit of 50 permits will be given out each day, beginning at 8 a.m. at the park concession stand. Only one permit per person, per week is allowed.
