A Cullman County jury recently found a Joppa man not guilty of raping and sodomizing a child.
According to Cullman County Circuit Court records, Bobby Glenn Riley, 42, was found not guilty Friday of the charges of sodomy in the first degree and rape in the second degree.
“We respect the jury system and that was the jury’s decision,” said Assistant District Attorney Martha Williams, who prosecuted the case.
Riley and his defense attorney, Greg Johnson, could not be reached for comment by deadline of this article.
The trial began on Sept. 2 and was conducted in Judge Don Hardeman’s courtroom.
A Cullman County grand jury indicted Riley on the charges on April 2. The indictment alleged Riley had engaged in deviate sexual intercourse with a child less than 12-years-old.
Cullman County Sheriff’s investigators first arrested Riley on the charges in March. The victim stated the sexual abuse had allegedly occurred several times in 2008.
Riley was arrested just a few days before he allegedly shot himself in the head with a 22-caliber rifle.
Court records indicate investigators obtained probable cause because Riley had allegedly stated he had attempted suicide because of the sexual abuse allegations and from stress over a financial situation.
