Grant aimed at getting dangerous drivers off roads

CULLMAN — Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded $228,968 in grants to ensure unsafe motorists are punished for disobeying state traffic laws.

The three grants awarded to two state agencies and a non-profit organization will help take dangerous drivers off the road in a timely manner and assist families who have been victimized by drunken drivers.

“The warnings are loud and clear: Drive recklessly or under the influence and you will pay for your bad decision,” Bentley said. “Drivers who ignore this message put lives at risk, so it is vital that they be apprehended and held fully accountable.”

A $165,942 grant to the state Office of Prosecution Services will provide supplemental training for district attorneys and their staffs to ensure they have up-to-date knowledge of current law and are well prepared to prosecute traffic violations.

A $34,551 grant to the Alabama Department of Public Safety will help prevent a backlog of cases involving drivers’ license suspensions. Funding will be used to provide special prosecutors and other assistance to avoid delays in resolving suspension appeals cases.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving was awarded a $28,475 to support awareness campaigns about the perils of driving while under the influences. MADD also offers support services for the families of victims of drunken driving crashes.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants.
