Probate judge recuperating after fall at courthouse leaves her with broken leg

CULLMAN — Probate Judge Leah Patterson-Lust is recuperating from surgery following an accident at the Cullman County Courthouse last week in which she broke her leg while exiting through the building’s north door in her wheelchair.

Patterson-Lust, who was leaving the courthouse following a late probate hearing last Friday, fell from her wheelchair as it passed over the entryway’s threshold, according to County Commission Chairman James Graves. She has been hospitalized at Cullman Regional Medical Center since having surgery on her leg Wednesday, according to chief probate clerk Leann Pruett.

“It was just a bad day for her,” said Pruett. “She is now in the hospital and she has to recover from the surgery, but she will be back to work soon.”

Graves said the county is in the process of modifying the north entrance so that it will be more convenient for Patterson-Lust to gain access to and from the courthouse when she returns to her job.

According to Graves, the courthouse complies fully with accessibility standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, but added that the county ought to make the entrance Patterson-Lust regularly uses more accommodating, in light of her accident.

“After all that she has been through with this accident, I just want to make a more convenient point of access for her to use when she comes back,” he said. “She uses that entrance every day, and I just feel like she should be able to continue to use that entrance without it being burdensome.”

Graves said installation of the door, including materials, is expected to cost approximately $3,300. The work will be done by Cullman Overhead Door & Glass.
