CULLMAN — A Cullman County man and his eight-year-old son were killed Sunday night in an automobile accident near Baileyton.
James Bridges, 37, and his son A.J. Bridges — both of Baileyton — died Sunday night in a single vehicle crash on County Road 1718, in-between Baileyton and Holly Pond, at approximately 9:35 p.m.
James and A.J. were pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries sustained during the accident.
“The car left the road and struck a tree,” Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree said. “The top of the car was crushed in on the passenger and driver. They were both wearing seatbelts and the airbags deployed, but the way the roof was crushed it didn’t seem to provide much help.”
The vehicle involved was a 2007 Hyundai.
Murphree said the Baileyton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
“They did a tremendous job with extrication and provided help working the scene,” he said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to Alabama State Trooper reports.
These are the second and third fatalities reported in Cullman County in 2010.
There have been 26 reported fatalities statewide to date in 2010, compared to 18 fatalities reported to date in 2009, according to the most recent ADECA statistics.
