CULLMAN — Due to icy weather, Cullman County students will be able to stay up late Thursday night to watch the Alabama vs. Texas BCS football national championship.
The Cullman County Board of Education has canceled classes on Thursday and Friday, as well as all athletic events on those days. Classes should resume on Monday.
“We are doing this because of the weather and extremely low temperatures,” Superintendent Hank Allen said. “There is estimated to be a zero degree chill factor, and that is very cold to have children standing out waiting on a school bus.”
The National Weather Service is forecasting extremely low temperatures for the remainder of the week, and a 70 percent chance of snow on Thursday.
High temperatures will hover in the 20s, and lows may reach as low as 9 degrees, forecasts show.
Cullman City Schools have not announced plans to cancel classes, though a decision could come today, depending on the weather.
“We are going to wait for further information,” Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris said.
