Monday night storms bring heavy rainfall

CULLMAN — A system of storms that hit the area Monday afternoon dropped several inches of rainfall on Cullman County, briefly flooding several local roads when downpours were at their peak.

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded 3-5 inches of rain across Cullman County, which held steady with totals across north Alabama.

Anecdotal reports note several roads around the City of Cullman and Cullman County held inches of standing water Monday evening, though no damage was reported.

The Cullman County Emergency Management Agency didn’t receive any official reports of roads being washed out.

EMA Director Phyllis Little said the flooding that did occur was likely the result of too much water being dumped on the city’s drainage system too quickly.

“I’m sure most of the flooding was caused because all the water couldn’t be carried out as quickly as it was coming down,” she said.
