Stolen food stamps lead to meth bust
By Patrick McCrelessThe discovery of a stolen food stamp card led to the arrest of three locals for alleged meth manufacturing Friday.
Cullman police arrested Dana Faye Denton, 32, of Cullman, John Harnerick Jennings, 38, of Snead and David Lee Horton, 48, of Cullman for unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance in the second degree. Denton was also charged with illegal possession of food stamps in the third degree. Jennings and Horton were also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Matt Gentry, director of the Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET), said the case began after officers received a tip that a woman was trying to sell a food stamp card that was not in her name. Officers received a description of the vehicle she was riding in, which they later stopped at 4th Street S.W. Also riding with her was Jennings and Horton.
“They (officers) got the card off of Denton, she had it in her hand,” Gentry said. “It was stolen.”
After obtaining probable cause, the officers then searched the vehicle, where they recovered three backpacks and one duffle bag that contained ingredients and chemicals used to manufacture meth.
“That’s an easy way for people to transport materials for meth,” Gentry said.
Officers also recovered 5 grams of meth.
All three suspects are incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center, each with a $1 million bond.
Unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance in the second degree is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Illegal possession of food stamps in the third degree is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by not more than one year in the county jail or one year of hard labor for the county.
