Cold Springs gym, dugout work approved
Up to $40,000 in repair work for the Cold Springs High School gym and baseball dugout has been approved and is slated to begin soon.
Cullman County Board of Education Superintendent Hank Allen said some old water pipes at the high school gymnasium must be replaced due to safety concerns.
“We had a problem at the gym with high lead readings,” he said. “We tested it three times to be sure it was a problem and it was. It had to be addressed.”
Allen said no students were at risk due to the issue, because students had not been allowed to drink water from those pipes.
“There were never any students in danger,” he said. “They weren’t allowed to use that water.”
The older pipes at the gym, which date back to at least the 1960s, will be replaced with PVC pipes.
“We’re trying to do things in the least expensive way possible, but it still costs money,” Allen said. “This really is an emergency that had to be fixed.”
To repair the problem, the school board approved $12,123 for water line replacement materials, $10,904 for plumbing fixtures and $3,980 for a water heater. All of the materials will come from Southern Pipe and Supply.
To handle the labor for the work, the board approved plans to pay $45-per-hour for a master plumber, $35-per-hour for a journeyman and $25-per-hour for an apprentice with Best Plumbing. Allen said he was unsure exactly how many hours it will take to do the installations, though labor costs should not exceed $12,000.
The board also approved $4,702 to repair the Cold Springs High School baseball dugout, which was damaged by recent storms. Bestway Construction will handle the project.
