Man arrested for allegedly endangering own daughter chemically
Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Holly Pond man Thursday for allegedly keeping meth ingredients near his 8-year-old daughter.
Andy Derrick Cluxton, 39, was charged with chemical endangerment of a child. According to sheriff’s reports, Cluxton was out on bond for a meth manufacturing arrest in Morgan County.
Deputies were dispatched to Cluxton’s home Thursday to investigate a complaint of possible drug activity.
Reports indicate deputies found Cluxton shortly after arriving at the scene, located at a residence on County Road 1742. They also detected a strong chemical odor, said Chief Deputy Tony Quick.
“Once there, they interviewed the occupant of the residence, Andy Cluxton, and found some components for the manufacture of methamphetamine in plain view,” Quick said.
Among the components were chemicals, plastic tubing and red phosphorus, which is typically found on matches.
Upon further investigation, deputies discovered Cluxton’s daughter in an adjoining room from where the meth ingredients were found.
“DHR (Department of Human Resources) was called to assist in the custody of the child,” Quick said.
Quick noted that though there were enough ingredients at the scene needed to charge Cluxton with chemical endangerment, there were not enough to charge him with unlawful manufacturing of meth, which carries the stiffer penalty of the two.
Quick said the case is still under investigation and more charges could soon be filed.
Cluxton was incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center but has since been released on a $10,000 bond. However, his bond may soon be revoked on his Morgan County arrest, Quick said.
Chemical endangerment of a child is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
